Chimney Rock

Saving land near Chimney Rock

WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

LINCOLN - It took four to six months for wagon trains crossing Nebraska to reach Oregon or California in the 1800s.

Now a group of Nebraskans hopes to raise $1.2 million in the same amount of time to preserve the land around the most famous landmark on the trail.

The Nebraska State Historical Society wants to raise the money by August to purchase nearly 552 acres at the base of Chimney Rock to ensure its protection from potential development.

Major gifts from foundations, organizations and others are expected to lead the drive, such as an anticipated $300,000 grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust.

Individuals also may contribute. Donations of all sizes are welcome, said Lynne Ireland, a society spokeswoman.

Contributions may be sent to the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation, 128 N. 13th St., Lincoln, NE 68508.

People also may call the foundation at 402-435-3535 to contribute using a credit card.

Members of the Oregon-California Trails Association will be encouraged to contribute, said Travis Boley, the group’s manager in Independence, Mo.
