Deverell Biggs and the other two seniors on the All-Metro Conference first team are going to be turning over the keys to the league to Duol Mayot and Galen Gullie.
The first from his school to make the All-Metro first team since 2002, Mayot averaged 16.7 points and 8.9 rebounds as the Packers (12-10) finished above .500 for the first time since 1994.
“He had a nice year, but he has to have a bigger one next year,’’ South coach Bruce Chubick said. “We need him to step up bigger if we want to move up to the next level.’’
Gullie, a two-year starter on state-tournament teams for Omaha Bryan, led the Bears in scoring (14.6 ppg.) and was second in assists.
“He carried them when Ben Imig went out,’’ Millard North coach Chip Bahe said.
Biggs, a repeat first-teamer from Omaha Central, is the All-Metro honorary captain. He led the Eagles to the school’s fourth Class A state title in five seasons and his third in four years.
With a season high of 35 points in the state semifinals against Lincoln Southeast, the 6-foot-1 senior topped Central in scoring with 21.1 points a game and was its assists leader.
“The most explosive player in the state,’’ Bahe said.
Also on the first team are seniors Caleb Steffensmeier of Omaha Creighton Prep and Mike Dentlinger of Millard North. Each was on the All-Metro second team as juniors.
Steffensmeier is a University of Nebraska at Omaha point-guard recruit who averaged 13.6 points and nearly five assists a game.
Dentlinger, at 6-6 the tallest on the first team, averaged a double-double for the second straight year, with norms of 21.0 points and a Class A-best 11.8 rebounds. He’s the first boy in school history with more than 1,000 points in his career.
The All-Metro second team includes Bryan’s Imig, who missed a month of games with a broken hand before returning for state. Also on the team are seniors Cole Martin of Prep and Ray McGaugh of Omaha Burke and juniors Avery Langford of Omaha Benson and Jalen Hueser of Papillion-La Vista South.
Central freshman Akoy Agau made the third team.
