Rex Grove enjoyed Sunday's warmth with three friends and two canoes.
With the afternoon temperature near 60 degrees, Grove led the group down a steep bank of dry grass and soft mud near 138th and State Streets to launch their canoes down the Big Papio Creek.
Over the next three hours, they paddled in the sunshine from Omaha's northwest fringe to 84th Street and Interstate 80. “The water was a little cold, but we didn't get in, of course,” Grove said.
There will be more than enough opportunities for outdoor activities this week. The forecast is so good, one expert could barely hide his glee.
“We have a glorious, glorious week in store for the residents of the Omaha metro,” said David Eastlack, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Valley. “It's just going to be a welcome, welcome relief to end this perpetual winter.”
Abundant sunshine will push temperatures well over 70 by midweek, the weather service says. Accuweather foresees a veritable scorcher on Wednesday: a high of 84.
Low pressure will move through the area by Friday, perhaps producing thunderstorms, along with more normal highs in the 60s.
Folks ought to seize the chance to get outdoors, Grove said. “It looks like it's time. The weather's right.”
