5:33 p.m.: Scratch Mike Nesseth from that start on the pitcher's mound against North Dakota tonight. Scratch the Nebraska right-hander, in fact, for the remainder of this baseball season.
NU announced this afternoon that Nesseth would not pitch again as a junior after an MRI exam revealed damage to his right elbow. Nesseth, who had struggled this year as the NU closer and was removed from the role recently, underwent the test as a precaution, coach Mike Anderson said.
"It is a pretty big shock because Mike had not complained of any issues," Anderson said in a statement. "Because of recent struggles and a drop in velocity, we wanted to rule out the possibility of injury, so we went for an MRI. Mike has a strong will and a big heart and wanted to continue to pitch. I am thankful we have found the problem and minimized the risk for further injury, and now we can focus our efforts on getting Mike back to full health."
Nesseth thrived as a redshirt freshman reliever in 2008 but turned inconsistent last year as NU shuffled him between the starting rotation and the bullpen. He was drafted in the 15th round by the Los Angeles Angels but opted to return to Nebraska.
In 10 games this year, he was 1-2 with a 6.43 ERA. He had not allowed a hit in his past two outings over 6 1/3 innings against Texas and Northern Colorado.
Sophomore Sean Yost will start tonight in place of Nesseth. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Haymarket Park.
We'll have a full report on Nesseth and the game later on Omaha.com and Wednesday in The World-Herald.
