LINCOLN — The Omaha-area learning community could levy a smaller amount of property tax under a bill passed Wednesday by the Legislature.
Legislative Bill 1070 also would change how those property taxes would be used. Under the bill, the learning community levy would be split between focus schools and elementary learning center programs.
The learning community now has authority to levy up to 5 cents per $100 of assessed valuation for capital projects.
LB 1070 would replace that authority with the ability to levy up to 1 cent to pay for the elementary programs and services. The community could levy an additional 2 cents for focus schools.
The bill also would require the learning community to do annual evaluations of progress
