3:53 p.m.: Nebraska marked the halfway point of its spring practice season Saturday with a 150-play scrimmage inside Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The approach was very basic, according to offensive coordinator Shawn Watson.
No ultra-deceptive play calls. No wild, unconventional formations. One unit would only have about eight plays before the coaches abruptly ended the possession and switched in an entirely new personnel group.
But for this point in the year, Watson said the players performed well.
“It was a good go, a really good go,” said Watson, the only member of the NU team available for media interviews after the two-hour scrimmage.
Asked about Taylor Martinez, Watson grouped the redshirt freshman in among the rest of the Husker quarterbacks.
“They're all at the same spot. They're all developing,” he said.
Watson did say sophomore Rex Burkhead had a good day, but he also made sure to emphasize that the NU staff hopes to begin the season with three No. 1 running backs. Ideally, they'd be four- or five-deep at that spot, Watson said.
Sophomore Kyler Reed received some extra playing time, since tight ends Dreu Young and Ben Cotton are both dealing with undisclosed, day-to-day injuries, according to Watson.
“Kyler Reed has gotten a lot of time and he needed that,” Watson said.
The Huskers will return to the practice field Monday. They have seven on-field sessions before the spring game April 17.
