COUNCIL BLUFFS Tuesday’s Lewis Central girls track invitational provided participants with the final opportunity to qualify for next week’s Drake Relays in Des Moines.
Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln senior Chelsea Colpitts made the most of that chance. The senior won the shot put and discus, giving her some much-needed momentum heading into next week’s prestigious event.
Colpitts last qualified for Drake in 2008 as a sophomore. She missed her junior year while recovering from a knee injury suffered during basketball season, and she’s grateful to be back at the top of her game.
“It was a real confidence-booster to have heading into Drake,” Colpitts said. “It just makes me that more excited to excel over there.”
Colpitts won the discus by more than 34 feet, winning with a career-best throw of 139-6. According to quikstatsiowa.com, that distance ranks second in the state regardless of class, although it’s possible others could have bettered that mark Tuesday night.
Colpitts won the shot put at 39-4½, roughly five feet better than second-place finisher and A.L. teammate Jordan Gillenwater. Entering Tuesday, Colpitts’ season best of 40-9 in the shot put was tied for ninth among all Iowa athletes.
Harlan won the team title with 207 points, 35 more than second-place Omaha Marian, and took golds in six events: high jump, 3,200-meter relay, distance medley relay and the 400, 800 and 1,600 relay.
Harlan coach Bill Hosack said he was especially impressed with his 1,600 relay, made up of freshmen Jessica Feldman and Lauren Larsen and sophomores Ashley Kloewer and Shelbie Jacobsen. They finished in 4:11.83, which was impressive considering the day’s strong winds.
“We ran a great mile relay,” Hosack said. “The competition was good, and we got some great efforts. It just wasn’t a good day to collect times (with the wind).”
Despite his team’s victory Tuesday, Hosack noted that much work remains, not only before the Drake Relays but for the rest of the year.
“We’re getting there, but I don’t know if we’re there in anything right now, to tell you the truth,” Hosack said. “We’ve gone to Drake and won, but it’s also a hard place to feel good about yourself when you’re done.”
Second-place Marian won seven events. Six of the Crusaders wins were in track events: the 3,000, 100, 800 relay, 100 hurdles, 200 and 400 relay. Their only field event win came in the long jump, with freshman Payton Horacek at 16-1½.
Tuesday’s success was a welcome sign for Marian coach Greg Golka. He has been waiting for an individual to emerge as a leader, and Tuesday’s results showcased much potential.
“Our girls really stepped up today,” Golka said. “We’ve kind of been waiting for someone to step up and have a good race, and today we had a lot of people do that.”
Lewis Central’s Natalie Olberding won the 400 hurdles in 1:06.01, but she was the only other Council Bluffs competitor to win an event.
Among other western Iowa participants, Glenwood was the only school to leave with a victory. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Lexi Fisher, Kassie Finn, Abby Brown and Mercedes Liparoto won with a time of 1:11.23. Katie Larsen grabbed the 1,500 in 5:31.70.
Team scoring: Harlan 207, Omaha Marian 172, Glenwood 130.5, CB Abraham Lincoln 103, CB Lewis Central 73.5, East Mills 22, Sioux City East 18.
