Millard South sophomore says 800 is new favorite

FREMONT, Neb. — Morgan Woitzel has a new favorite event.

It’s the 800, and the Millard South sophomore expressed her fondness for it Friday after nearly breaking into the state’s all-time chart and shaving more than two seconds off the Fremont Invitational record with her time of 2:14.79.

It was only the second time she’s tried the 800.

“I like it better than the open 400,’’ Woitzel said. “It’s a less stressful pace.’’

She took home four gold medals. She also won the 400 meters at 57.91 and ran anchor legs on the Patriots’ 400 and 1,600 relays. The Patriots won the five-team girls meet with 139 points to 112 for runner-up Millard North.

Fremont, after a slow start, outscored Norfolk 159-136 for the title in the six-team boys meet at Appleget Field.

In the girls 800, Taylor Johnson of Lincoln Southeast stayed with Woitzel through the first lap and ended up three seconds behind her.

“I need that push,’’ said Woitzel, who considered 2:20 to be her goal for Friday. “I don’t think I can do it by myself.’’

Clara Nichols gave the Patriots wins in the 100 and 200 and Tiara Cobb swept the long jump and triple jump for Millard South’s other event titles.

Fremont coach Dave Sellon said pole vaulter Spencer Longacre and the Tigers’ discus threesome turned around the meet for their team. Longacre cleared 14-6 and tried for the meet record of 15-2¼. Curtis Leick went 174-9 to lead a 1-3-4 finish in the discus.

“All three had PRs, and that was 20 points for us,’’ Sellon said. “Jordan Larson and Roger Brohimer, a sophomore, went 1-2 in the high hurdles and our distance guys came up really big for us, too.’’

Britt Jensen won the 800 and Blake Peterson the 3,200 for Fremont. Braxton Voss, who won the 400, helped the Tigers wrap up their team title by running anchor on the champion 1,600 relay.
