Tara Oltman threw a two-hit shutout in her 168th career appearance, as the senior All-American tied the Missouri Valley record for appearances in an 8-0 six-inning win over Northern Iowa on Sunday. Renae Sinkler tied the Bluejay single-season record by driving in a pair of runs to reach 43.
The win was Creighton's sixth straight in Valley play and 12th straight against Northern Iowa (20-20, 7-8), moving CU to 23-18 and 8-5 in Valley play.
Creighton's bats stayed hot, scoring three runs in the first inning. Christa Ruf, batting leadoff for the first time this season, singled to left field to start the game and moved to second base on Amy Baker's one-out single. Michelle Graner followed with her sixth home run of the year to give the Jays a 3-0 lead. Graner's homer to left field just cleared the outstretched glove of UNI left fielder Hannah Borschel.
The Bluejays added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to blow the game open. Sinkler singled to left field to drive in two runs and tie Bluejay assistant coach Abby Johnson's single-season RBI record of 43 which was established in 2004.
While the CU bats stayed hot, Oltman was again tough in the circle, throwing her ninth shutout of the season, third in Valley play. The three-time Valley pitcher of the year allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out two to move to 19-9 on the year. Her 168th career appearance tied the Valley record held by Darcy Wood of Indiana State.
