LINCOLN — Kenny Bell already would own the Colorado state record in the long jump if his leap hadn’t been ruled wind-aided.
Boulder Fairview coach Ty McCluskey is convinced that wasn’t Bell’s only shot at it.
“I think he will set it,” McCluskey said. “It’s all up to him. I think he’ll hit it.”
Bell is among a handful of Nebraska football recruits posting impressive times or distances in their final seasons of high school track.
The senior long jumped 24 feet, 9 inches at the Broomfield Shootout on April 3, but the breeze was just enough for the “wind-aided” tag. His second-best jump of 23-0 still leads Class 5-A by nearly 8 inches. The state record is 24-5½.
Bell last year placed third at the 5-A meet at 21-7¼ in the long jump. He also owns a personal best of 6-4 in the high jump from 2009 and will be running the 100-meter dash and 400 relay for Fairview in coming weeks.
“He’s been a little bit up and down with his 100 because he went out for basketball and we got him late,” McCluskey said. “But he’s jumping great. He’s just a great athlete.”
Some other notable efforts by NU football recruits:
Tyler Evans of Waverly shares the Nebraska all-class lead in the 200 meters at 21.6 seconds. Evans also is part of the Waverly 400 relay that ranks fourth among all schools (42.84). He will be the Class B defending state champ in the 100 at the state meet.
Quincy Enunwa, from Rancho Verde High in Moreno Valley, Calif., has gone 6-9 in the high jump and 43-¾ in the triple jump. The receiver’s best in the triple jump is a 45-3 from May 2009.
Andrew Rodriguez is the Class B leader in the shot put at 57-4½, bettering the 2009 best of 57-2 for the offensive lineman from Aurora, Neb.
Ryne Reeves of Crete might be headed for a Class B showdown with Rodriguez at state. The offensive lineman and 2011 Husker recruit is at 57-1 in the shot put.
Walker Ashburn, a defensive end from John Curtis High in Kenner, La., had throws of 47-4 in the shot put and 134-5 in the discus last week at the Class 2A Region III meet, placing second in both events. Ashburn’s personal bests are 50-1½ and 134-8, respectively.
