    TRACK AND FIELD

Long jump mark gone with the wind

Tuesday's gusty winds did little good for the stars of the Metro Conference track meet.

Millard South sophomore Morgan Woitzel won two events Tuesday, the 400 and 800, but running in the dinner-hour breeze at Burke Stadium slowed her times. “When I looked at the (school) flags, the wind was switching around," Woitzel said. “It made me kind of nervous."

The wind was so strong that manning the wind gauge was fruitless when Omaha North junior LaQue Moen-Davis nearly broke 20 feet in the long jump.

Still, her 19-11 tops the state's all-time charts in that event, since the chart includes wind-aided distances. The previous top mark was 19-9¼ by Candice Mills of Omaha Marian in 2002.

Moen-Davis has three events left when the meet concludes Wednesday with 11 events for boys and for girls. Moen-Davis, the state leader in the triple jump and the 100 high hurdles, will compete in both events Wednesday and will run the 300 hurdles for the first time this season in a varsity meet.

Woitzel made the 100 finals — “I'd be happy to be in the top five” — and will run on the 1,600 relay that has the only sub-four-minute time this season in the state. “I hope we can go faster," she said. “We should all be fresh."

Woitzel narrowly held off teammate Clara Nichols in the 400, winning in 57.10 to 57.22.

“I could hear her behind me all the way," Woitzel said.

She'll be pulling for Nichols to pull off a 100-200 sweep. Nichols led qualifying in each event.

Millard West got wins from Sidney Hirsch in the 3,200 and Amber Lutmer in the shot put for the first-day girls lead.

The Wildcats' boys, the defending Metro champions, ended Tuesday with a 1-3 finish in the 800 from Jared Kenney and Johnny Hower for a 52-39 lead over Bellevue West. The Thunderbirds scored 24 points on a 1-2-3 sweep of the pole vault.
