It’s a big weekend for the Creighton softball team, which will try to secure a top-two finish in the Missouri Valley while honoring its six graduating seniors.
The top two seeds will get a two-round bye in the MVC tournament May 13 to 15 in Des Moines.
“For us to get second, we need to win one more game than Illinois State does this weekend,’’ CU coach Brent Vigness said.
Southern Illinois leads the MVC at 18-4, followed by Illinois State at 16-5 and Creighton at 16-6. The Bluejays will host a three-game series with Evansville (9-14) while the Redbirds will take on Bradley (5-18).
“Our team certainly understands the importance of an extra-round bye,’’ Vigness said.
Michelle Graner, Tara Oltman, Renae Sinkler, Michelle Koch, Jessi Jadlowski and Sara Loeffelholz will be honored between the games of Saturday’s noon doubleheader.
This class will be especially tough to replace, Vigness said, because the group took Creighton to the next level, where it could compete against the elite national programs.
“They not only elevated our program, it’s how they’ve done it,’’ he said. “It’s been done in such a class way. They are all good kids and great students. They’ve just done it the right way.’’
