Omaha Central's Deverell Biggs tied a Metro Conference meet record by winning the high jump at 6 feet, 10 inches. The Central boys finished third behind champion Millard West and Bellevue West.

State record powers Vikings; Eagle soars at Metros

A state record in the 400-meter relay capped Omaha North's first Metro Conference title in girls track and field.

The Vikings' foursome of Bre'unna McCarty, Maia Reynolds, Janesha McGhee and Brianna McGhee, running together for the first time this season, circled the Burke Stadium track in 47.78 seconds Wednesday to better the 47.93 that North ran at the 2009 state meet.

“And we had a bad exchange in the second zone,'' North girls coach Lori Danner said.

“I watched Janesha start running, and she didn't have the baton,'' Brianna McGhee said. “She had to look down to get it.''

Brianna McGhee also won the 200 — North had a 1-2-4 finish — and was second in the 100 high hurdles and the long jump in the two-day conference meet.

“She has the heart of a champion,'' Danner said. “She's a little bit hurt, but she wouldn't let you know that.''

Millard West repeated as boys team champion with the aid of wins in the 3,200 relay to start Wednesday's finals and the 1,600 relay to end the meet.

“Our middle-distance and distance runners were our strong suit,'' Wildcats boys coach Max Kurz said. “And we had our hurdlers come through big time.''

North's LaQue Moen-Davis, as she did last year for Omaha Central, won three golds. She added wins in the high hurdles and the triple jump to Tuesday's all-time best in the long jump. But she half-heartedly ran the 300 hurdles, placing 28th of 31 who finished with a time of 55.35. The high jump had been her fourth event in previous meets.

She received the meet's award as the outstanding girls field-events athlete. Other athletes of the meet were Morgan Woitzel of Millard South in girls track events, Thomas Hodges of North in boys track events and Chris Reed of Central in boys field events.

Woitzel ran anchor on the Patriots' 1,600 relay that broke Central's 29-year-old meet record after winning the 400 and 800 on Tuesday. Hodges swept the 100 and 200. Reed swept the shot put and discus titles.

Deverell Biggs of Central tied a meet record by clearing 6-10 in the boys high jump. He had three good attempts at 7-¼, Central boys coach Elliott Evans said.

Marshall Anderson of Papillion-La Vista pulled away in the 1,600 to complete a sweep of the two longest races. Millard West freshman Sidney Hirsch did likewise in the girls distance events.
