The Council Bluffs Education Association, which represents about 700 teachers in the Council Bluffs Community School District, voted 260-1 Friday to accept a contract with a 2.6 percent total package increase for the 2010-11 school year.
The Council Bluffs school board will be asked to approve the collective bargaining agreement at its meeting Tuesday.
The agreement means annual rates of pay would range from a low of $36,828 to a high of $68,225, depending on the teacher‘s experience and education levels.
The teachers union had asked for a 6 percent increase in wages at the start of negotiations.
"I’m glad we reached an agreement, and I’m glad we ratified it," chief negotiator Bob Hansen, a math teacher at Abraham Lincoln High School, said Friday afternoon.
Janet Reiners, the executive director of human resources and a negotiator for the school district, said, "While we had hoped the association would agree to a salary freeze ... we chose to settle to avoid arbitration. We felt it was in the best interest of the staff to settle for the most economical amount we could."
