Ernest Richardson knows exactly what Memorial Day is all about.
“It’s about our troops and the sacrifices they’ve made for our country,” said Richardson, resident conductor of the Omaha Symphony.
This Sunday, the symphony will celebrate America’s armed forces with a Patriotic Pops in the Park concert in Council Bluffs. The performance starts at 7 p.m. on Lake Manawa State Park’s north shore.
Richardson will lead the orchestra in such familiar patriotic works as “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful,” along with Sousa marches and arrangements of the various armed forces theme songs.
The orchestra also will perform music from patriotic movies.
Sunday’s concert is free, and families are encouraged to have picnics and bring blankets.
