About 200 children's bike helmets and 50 bikes will be given away this Sunday at the eighth annual Safety Awareness Fitness & Education Event.

Ofelia Robles, crime prevention specialist with the Omaha Police Department, said the SAFE event is aimed at giving kids and their parents information on safety and crime prevention.

The event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Salvation Army Kroc Center, 2825 Y St.

Robles said about 1,000 people are expected to attend the free event. It's geared toward children age 12 and under. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Activities include free food, 20 information booths, police and fire demonstrations, face painting, raffles and bike safety checks, Robles said.

"It's a fun learning experience and opportunity for families to get together, meet officers and get information," Robles said.
