The first Firefighter and Police Appreciation Day is in the books and plans are in motion for next year’s event.
Ray Somberg, one of the event founders, said an executive director will be hired to work with the six-person board and help decide next year’s activities. The event will be a statewide observance next year, Somberg said.
Somberg and his friend Jerry Hoberman came up with the idea for an event to show appreciation to Omaha’s police and firefighters.
The Firefighter and Police Appreciation Foundation has raised more than $650,000 in donations, which goes to put on the event and to buy equipment for both departments. This year’s event was held Thursday.
