The Good Neighbor awards recognize individuals who have performed neighborly acts and unselfish deeds. Beth El Synagogue's Rabbi Mordechai Levin was honored recently by the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City, receiving an honorary Doctorate of Divinity. Levin was honored for his achievements and religious leadership in the cause of Conservative Judaism and the Jewish people.
McMillan Magnet Center nurse Elizabeth Wilson has been selected as the 2010 Nebraska School Nurse of the Year by the Nebraska Association of School Nurses. McMillan is part of the Omaha Public Schools.
Sue Burzynski Bullard, an associate professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln who teaches editing and reporting, has been elected to the executive committee of the American Copy Editors Society for a two-year term.
Radio One founder Catherine L. Hughes is one of nine former Boys & Girls Club members recently inducted into the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Alumni Hall of Fame. The national alumni hall honors former club members who have made major contributions to their respective fields and to their communities. Hughes grew up in Omaha. She and husband Dewey Hughes run the nation's largest African-American owned and operated radio chain.
Cindy Fitzgerald, an Omaha Hy-Vee florist, recently won the Borgen Cup award for her fall store display. The floral manager at the 108th and Fort Streets Hy-Vee was honored for best color harmony for using candy corn in her display. The competition is exclusively for supermarket and high-volume florists.
Brenda K. Windmuller of Blair, Neb., has earned the certified pastry chef designation from the American Culinary Federation Inc. Windmuller is an instructor at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs.
The Mid-America Council of the Boy Scouts of America recently honored volunteers. The C.L. Werner family was recognized as the Centennial Citizen of the Year. Union Pacific Railroad was honored as the Centennial Corporate Partner of the Year. And 17 volunteers were awarded the Silver Beaver Award: Cheryl Smith, Trish Place, Wally Farley, John Shores, Mark Wiesman, all of Omaha; Doug Cutter and Ron Ward of Bellevue; Terry Jordan, Ralston; Marlene Lucht, Blair; Doug Schlickbernd, Tekamah; Joni Jaeger, Winside; Kendall Christensen, Columbus; Dave Ladenthin, Le Mars, Iowa; John Milroy, Hawarden, Iowa; Mary Thunhorst, Spirit Lake, Iowa; and Mark Versch and Mike Mayne, both of Council Bluffs.
