Flood measures at Cooper Nuclear

Because the Missouri River had reached 42.5 feet at Brownville, Neb., early Tuesday morning, officials at Cooper Nuclear Power Station issued a notice outlining the steps it has taken to address flooding.

The notice, issued to emergency officials and the public, is required by federal nuclear regulations.

As part of its emergency plan, Nebraska Public Power District, which owns Cooper, sandbagged the exterior of doorways last week. NPPD will sandbag interior doors if the river rises another six inches or so Tuesday.

The river would have to rise an additional 2.5 feet before NPPD would have to begin closing the plant, based on NPPD's federally approved safety plan.

The notification of an unusual event is the least serious of the four categories of emergency notification.
