The 50th anniversary edition of the Nebraska One Box Pheasant Hunt is hitting the right note.
Country music stars John Anderson and Lorrie Morgan will continue the tradition of celebrity hunters at Broken Bow, Neb., event, said Paul Ulmer, chairman.
The Nov. 4-7 event pits competitive teams of five hunters each against the clock. Each team is limited to one box of 25 shotgun shells, divided among team members as they see fit. Points are awarded on the number of pheasants and quail bagged by each team.
The competitive pheasant hunt takes place Nov. 6. Other shooting and social events starting Nov. 4 include a trap shoot, sporting clays competition, a banquet and other activities.
Teams and individuals must apply to be considered for acceptance in each year's hunt.
Anderson and Morgan will be assigned to different teams. Other celebrity hunters will be announced in coming weeks. Seven five-person teams will take part in the competition.
Over its five-decade history, the hunt has featured a variety of celebrities, politicians, business leaders and entertainers on the teams. Among them were Gens. Norman Schwarzkopf and Curtis LeMay; astronauts Neil Armstrong, Wally Shirra and Gordon Cooper; baseball players Johnny Bench, Steve Carlton and Tim McCarver; musician Dan Seals; actors James Drury and Slim Pickens; professional football players Walt Garrison, Bob Lilly and Jay Novacek; and a score of governors and members of Congress from across the nation.
Registration fees and a charity auction raise money is reinvested in charitable projects to encourage participation in shooting sports and support youth programs and education. The event also provides thousands of dollars for habitat development and hunter-safety activities.
