Findings of a July survey by American Express indicating that U.S. consumers are avoiding excessive spending practices:
75% say their debt hasn't increased in the past six months
38% say their debt has declined in that time
46% are focused on paying down debt
29% are focused on saving
57% of respondents with debt have implemented specific plans to reduce or stabilize debt
