It's never too early for children to start Diggin' Nature. And that was the name of a recent summer day camp for pre-kindergartners ages 4 and 5.
Meanwhile, Junior Explorers ages 6 through 9 spent a week, well, exploring nature at their summer day camp.
The Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District put on the weekday camps at Chalco Hills Recreation Area.
For the younger kids, this year's camp theme was “Fish, Bugs, Birds, Reptiles/Amphibians & Mammals.”
Campers netted and displayed insects in see-through containers, learned to differentiate insects through bug bingo, got an amphibian's-eye view of a frog, took in the size of a great horned owl, created their own bugs from craft supplies, imitated bees by playing a pollination game, built birdhouses, learned to cast a fishing line and more.
Participants in the Junior Explorers camp spent the time fishing in Wehrspann Lake, erecting tents, cooking in Dutch ovens, journaling about nature, seeing creatures large and small, and examining animal pelts, among other activities.
