The two-week camp, held at UNL, aims to motivate students to excel in math and science.

Science, math fun at this camp

Fifty-two Omaha and Lincoln middle schoolers experienced a new type of summer vacation this year.

The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp gave them the chance to learn more about science, technology, engineering and math while also experiencing life at a college.

The residential camp brought together sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. They were hosted by Nebraska EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research).

Campers did experiments and individual and team projects that were part of the program designed to encourage continued interest in math and science courses. The camp also focused on developing leadership, communication and teamwork skills.

The ultimate goal of the program is to raise students’ awareness of career possibilities in science-, technology-, engineering- and math-related fields.

To attend the expenses-paid camp, students must have demonstrated a high commitment and interest in math and science; provided an essay explaining why they wanted to attend camp and how it would benefit them in the future; had at least a B average in math and science; scored at the median to superior level in standardized math and science tests; and were recommended by math and science teachers. — University of Nebraska-Lincoln
