Mike Evans has resigned after 22 seasons as Bellevue University’s baseball coach, school officials announced Monday.
The Bruins plan to start the search for a new coach immediately.
The successful program was rocked just before the postseason this spring when it had to forfeit most of its wins because of using an ineligible player.
Athletic Director Ed Lehotak said he could not say if that led to Evans’ decision.
“He told the administration he was not coming back, he was resigning,’’ Lehotak said.
Evans was not available for comment. He plans to pursue other opportunities, a school release said.
Lehotak said it could be more than a month before a replacement is named. The school plans to form a selection committee in the next week. The job has been posted on several baseball websites, he said.
“We’ll do the best we can to find the best coach we can,’’ Lehotak said.
Lehotak said he’ll attempt to get any players who are in town together on Tuesday for a meeting about the situation. Many, he said, are out of state playing for various summer teams.
Evans was 928-457-1 at Bellevue, and the Bruins advanced to the NAIA World Series 12 times. Bellevue won the national title in 1995 and finished second in 1997.
“Mike has brought a lot of recognition to the university and has won more than 900 games. That speaks for itself,’’ Lehotak said.
After the ruling by the NAIA, the Bruins finished this season 2-40 and 0-20 in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference.
