For the first year that I worked in advertising, whenever I told people what I did for a living, they'd nod their heads and say, “Oh yeah, right. Like Darrin on ‘Bewitched.' ”
Or occasionally, “Oh yeah, right. Like the dad on ‘The Brady Bunch.' ”
In both cases, I'd just nod my head. Advertising, architecture ... Potato, potahto.
But after the summer of 2007, all anyone wanted to talk about was “Mad Men.” Fortunately, that's all I wanted to talk about, too. (Sixties fashion and design, plus awesome writing, plus advertising? Deal me in.)
But instead of saying, “Just like ‘Mad Men,' right?' ” they'd say, “I'll bet it's nothing like ‘Mad Men.' ”
“Actually,” I'd find myself saying, “you'd be surprised ...”
