Master Gardener classes will get rolling in September in western Iowa, and Aug. 31 is the deadline to register.

Training will be held at the Mills County Extension Office, 415 Main St., in Malvern. Training will begin with an orientation session at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 and will continue on subsequent Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. through Nov. 2. The program involves 12 training sessions; a Saturday class will be held on the Ames campus in late October.

The Iowa State University Master Gardener program has trained more than 9,000 people since the program began in 1979. Training consists of 40 hours of Web-based broadcasting with ISU specialists and face-to-face instruction at extension offices and at ISU. In exchange, participants volunteer 40 hours during the next year.

Volunteers can work at helping schools, nursing homes, community education or beautification projects; answering questions on the phone or in person; giving presentations; discussing plants at the annual plant sale; or writing articles on gardening.

The cost is $150. Couples can register to take the class together for a discounted fee of $225, funded by the Mills County Master Gardeners.

To avoid a late fee of $25, return a completed registration form to the Mills County Extension Office no later than Aug. 31. Registration forms are available online at www.extension.iastate.edu/mills. Or contact Denise Fikes for more information: 712-624-8616 or dfikes@iastate.edu.
