More than 10,000 appliances were sold under Nebraska's appliance rebate program earlier this month, and the first rebate check should be in the mail by early next week.

Ginger Wilson, director of the Nebraska Energy Office, said that the office was screening rebate requests to ensure that all the products, people and destinations for the appliances fit the eligibility requirements for the federal money.

Congress allocated stimulus funds for the rebate program last year as a way to boost the economy and reduce energy use. Nebraska received $1.7 million, which was claimed by shoppers over the course of about five days.

On the morning of the program's kickoff, July 6, shoppers were claiming rebate money at the rate of $1,000 a minute at one point.

The state didn't begin processing the rebates until all the money was allocated, Wilson said. An outside processing company will print and mail the checks.

The rejection rate for rebate requests has been roughly 3 percent to 5 percent, and usually is due to such errors as not submitting proofs of purchase or failing to sign the correct forms.

People have until Aug. 9 to submit rebate claims.
