Parents got twins — plus one

Kristen Lehl has always wanted twins.

Her dad's a twin. His twin had twins. Twins run in other relatives on both sides of her family, too.

So in a way, it just seemed natural she would someday want twins of her own.

She got her wish. Plus one.

Kristen, 35, gave birth by C-section to triplets Saturday evening. They were born at the new Methodist Women's Hospital, which opened June 21 at 192nd Street and West Dodge Road.

The babies — Elizabeth Ann, Michael Joseph and William Henry — are healthy and doing well. Their birth weights ranged from 4 pounds, 2 ounces to 4 pounds, 5 ounces, and their lengths varied from 17.5 inches to 18 inches.

Methodist moved most of its labor and delivery services to the new hospital. Through July 10, the hospital had 196 deliveries, a hospital spokesman said.

While multiple births are on the rise, triplets are still relatively rare.

Among the 26,992 live births in Nebraska 2008, there were 17 sets of triplets, according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

Kristen and her husband, Greg Lehl, who live in west Omaha, suspected they were having multiples early in the pregnancy. They learned they would have three babies during an ultrasound in the first trimester.

“I just had a feeling,” said Kristen, who was discharged from the hospital Wednesday evening.

The babies' temperatures are stable, and they're eating well. Their parents expect to bring them home from the hospital in two weeks.

“We couldn't ask for anything more,” Kristen said.
