Dive right in to fun in La Vista

The City of La Vista will continue its 50th anniversary summer of commemorative events with an annual tradition, the Splash Bash, on Sunday.

Splash Bash offers free admission to the La Vista Municipal Pool, 7529 S. 85th St., from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Free food — hot dogs and drinks, while supplies last — music, games and prizes also will be available.

Community invited to Papio park's party

Papio Fun Park will celebrate its 20th anniversary Sunday with a free community party.

The public is welcome from noon to 9 p.m. to enjoy these free activities: go-karts, miniature golf, Lazer Runner, Water Wars, Spaceball and Jumpshot.

Papio Fun Park is at 210 E. Lincoln St. in Papillion.


Fair foundation benefit is Aug. 7

The sixth annual “Blue Ribbon Roll Out Food & Fun-on-a-Stick” will begin at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 7 to benefit the Nebraska State Fair 1868 Foundation.

Live music, fair food favorites and live and silent auctions will be dished up in the Heartland Events Center at Fonner Park in Grand Island, Neb. — the new home of the Nebraska State Fair.

Summer graduation Friday at UNK

Nearly 200 students will take part in the 10 a.m. Friday summer graduation ceremonies at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The ceremonies will take place in the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room. For those unable to attend, the event will be available as a webcast. Find the link by going to www.unk.edu/about/commencement/.

People's City Mission clinic plans open house

The People's City Mission in Lincoln will celebrate the first anniversary of its Free Medical Clinic with an open house Thursday.

It will run from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the clinic, 401 N. Second St. Pastor Tom Barber, executive director of the mission, will speak at 4 p.m. Tours will start at 4:30 p.m.

In one year, the clinic has had 8,221 visits by 3,667 patients, all of it funded by donations.


Film showing Saturday at Latino museum

El Museo Latino, 4701 S. 25th St., and the Mexican Consulate in Omaha will present another film in commemoration of Mexico's bicentennial independence from Spain and the centennial of the start of the Mexican Revolution.

“El Gran Calavera” (“The Great Madcap”) will be aired at noon Saturday at the museum. There is no charge to view the Spanish-language film with English subtitles.

Dr. Maria Arbelaez of the University of Nebraska at Omaha will give a lecture titled “Bicentennial Independence and Centennial of the Revolution” at 1 p.m. at the museum. Lecture attendance requires paid museum admission or membership.


Free paper shredding offered Saturday

American National Bank and Paper Tiger, an onsite shredding and recycling firm, will offer free shredding from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Bring materials to be destroyed to the bank parking lot at 90th Street and West Dodge Road. Free-will donations will be accepted to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
