SCHUYLER, Neb. — Gretna and Nebraska City produced convincing wins and improved to 2-0 Sunday, the second day of the Class B Senior American Legion baseball state tournament at Merchant Park.
Gretna took an early lead and never trailed in defeating Dwight/Valparaiso 9-3 while Nebraska City earned its second straight shutout win with a 3-0 victory against Weatherguard Systems Pride (Omaha Roncalli).
On Monday, Holdrege faces Dwight/Valparaiso in an elimination game at 1 p.m., and Gering will face Weatherguard at 4 p.m. In the winners bracket, Gretna will take on Nebraska City at 7 p.m.

Alex Arkfeld led Gretna's offense, going 2 for 4 with a single and a home run. Kevin Anderson also went 3 for 3 as Josh Reynolds picked up the win for Gretna.
Phil McNally led Dwight/Valparaiso, going 3 for 4.

Nebraska City 3, Weatherguard Systems Pride 0
Patrick Grundman went 2 for 3 with a double, and Trevor Rinne also went 2 for 3 to lead Nebraska City.
Logan Ehlers tossed a two-hitter to earn the win. The two-time All-Nebraska selection, who was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the eighth round of the major league draft, struck out 15.
Alex Terry struck out nine in the loss for Weatherguard, allowing six hits. Michael Herman and Heath Bandars each had a single for Roncalli.

Gering 16, Central City 5
Gering broke open a 1-1 game with a six-run fourth inning, then piled on eight more in the top of the seventh to knock Central City out of the tournament.
Zack Smith and Carlos Palomo both went 4 for 5 for Gering. Smith was also the winning pitcher, going five innings and recording six strikeouts.
Ben Clausen led Central City, going 2 for 4 with a home run. Kam Lenhart and Zack Butt also went 2 for 4 for Central City.

Holdrege 17, Schuyler 3 (5 inn.)
Facing elimination, Holdrege led 6-0 after two inning before exploding for 10 runs in the third to eliminate Schuyler in a run rule-shortened game.
Adam Christie went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a triple for Holdrege. Jayme Beachler earned the win, and went 2 for 4.
Klay Kasik went 2 for 3 for Schuyler.

Small ball keeps Class C Wakefield unbeaten
DeWITT, Neb. — Led by some small ball and a stingy defense, Wakefield knocked off St. Paul 8-5 in the winners bracket of the Class C Legion state tournament at Cody Park.
Casey Poss homered in the top of the seventh for St. Paul, but it was shut out from there. Wakefield is the only undefeated team left in the tournament.
In games Monday, Mount Michael will take on St. Paul in a 5 p.m. elimination game, and Creighton will try to avoid elimination when it faces Wakefield at 8 p.m.
Mount Michael 12, David City 2
Tim Carlson, Clay Taylor and Ted Pane homered to back a strong outing from Zach Loeffelholz.
Loeffelholz gave up seven hits and struck out 10 to eliminate David City from the tournament.
Creighton 6, Alma 0
Creighton pitchers Klay Fuchtman and Teran Boyer combined for the shutout in the elimination game.
