Headstone fund for abused boy

MINDEN, Neb. (AP) — A fund has been started to buy a headstone for a little Nebraska boy who authorities say died after child abuse by three family members.

Four-year-old Landon Payne died Dec. 22 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

The three family members told authorities that Landon fell from a bunk bed at their home in rural Kearney County. But doctors say he had numerous injuries in various stages of healing.

Hearings are set Thursday for 36-year-old Sharon Turnell and her husband, 37-year-old Charles Turnell and Sharon’s 19-year-old daughter, Katie Payne.

Each has denied charges of intentional child abuse resulting in death and of being accessory to a felony.

Landon was Sharon Turnell’s nephew.

The fund is at Platte Valley State Bank.
