COUNCIL BLUFFS — A new poll showed Council Bluffs City Councilman Matt Schultz in a close contest with incumbent Michael Mauro in the campaign for Iowa secretary of state.
Schultz, a Republican, was favored by 33 percent in the survey and Democrat Mauro had 30 percent support. Thirty-five percent of the respondents were undecided.
The poll of 500 people contacted by telephone July 25-28 had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.39 percentage points.
It was commissioned by the Iowa Republican and Concordia Group LLC, a Des Moines consulting and lobbying firm, and conducted by Voter Consumer Research.
“These numbers are encouraging, but it won't change what I'm doing,” Schultz said. “I have always campaigned as if I am 20 points behind, and I won't stop working hard.”
Democratic Party spokesman Sam Roecker said Mauro's accomplishments as secretary of state include easy access to voting for Iowans overseas, including those in the military.
“We are confident the voters will re-elect him,” Roecker said.
