It’s pretty hard to tell who is Chandra and who is Leigh, but they both have amazing voices.
The Watson Twins, since debuting on the indie scene in 2006, have impressed critics and fans with the singers’ voices, which effortlessly move through every style from Americana to indie pop to soul.
Currently on tour, the duo performs Monday at the Waiting Room Lounge.
The identical twin sisters made waves in 2006 when they collaborated with Jenny Lewis, of Rilo Kiley, on the album “Rabbit Fur Coat.” The record also includes contributions from folks such as Conor Oberst, M. Ward and Ben Gibbard. It was released on Oberst’s Team Love record label.
The twins started singing in front of crowds when they were 9 years old.
“Our mom took us to this church in Louisville (Kentucky). She said from before the time we could talk, we were singing together. We were always little hams performing for our grandmothers and always up for doing a show for somebody,” said Chandra Watson, who called from the road to talk up the girls’ new album and their headlining tour.
Since the twins’ album with Lewis, the duo has released an EP, “Southern Manners,” and two albums, “Fire Songs” and this year’s “Talking To You, Talking To Me.” With nearly identical voices, they came up with a pretty simple system for deciding who sings lead and who sings backup on a particular song.
“Whoever writes the song is the lead singer, then the other person is the backup singer,” Watson said with a chuckle. “Leigh and I write separately. There was nothing interesting or contrived about it.”
Watson said the band is looking forward to arriving in Nebraska, which is a couple of weeks into its nine-week stint on the road.
“By the time we get to Omaha, we’ll have some mad chops, something that’s a little bit more tight than what we do right now,” Watson said. “I love Omaha, obviously. We have a lot of connections there from when we were with Jenny Lewis, and obviously it’s a great music scene.”
They plan on singing old favorites, new songs and even some covers.
