Lauren Hunter’s favorite things mostly reflect her interest in politics and public policy.

Lauren, 22, grew up near 156th and Pacific Streets, the middle child of retired attorney Mark Hunter and former school psychologist Tammy Hunter, who is a paraprofessional at Millard’s Hitchcock Elementary.

A 2006 Millard North grad, Lauren earned her bachelor’s degree from Yale University in May and will soon return to pursue a master’s degree in public health. She has had internships with U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., in Washington, D.C., and the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. Her favorite objects:

1. Her night-night.

“It’s the blanket I’ve had since I was born. I’m a homebody, and I keep it in my apartment. It takes me back to family, home and Omaha when I can’t actually be there.”

2. Unitarian Universalist chalice pendant.

“Being a U-U has contributed to the formation of my values and personality. The pendant serves as a reminder of what’s important to me: tolerance, acceptance, social justice.

3. “The Agony of Alice,” a teen novel by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor.

“I have a dozen from this series at home. They’re fun books, and they affirm important life lessons like valuing friendship, appreciating people for who they are.”

4. DVDs of “The West Wing.”

“I always made time to watch that show. It introduced me to politics and inspired a passion that continues to influence what I want to do. It shows how one smart, dedicated person can influence big change.”

5. Sand-castle sculpture and poem, a gift from her speech coach.

“I really focused on forensics in high school. It introduced me to two crucial mentors: Coach Peterson, who wrote the poem, and Ms. Denney Bull. The poem is about being dedicated to constantly improving yourself, regularly making sure you’re living your values.”
