Ray of sunshine's fundraiser: Musicians will entertain Sunday at a fundraiser for a girl her family calls a ray of sunshine. Shelby Simpson, 10, was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma cancer, and Sunday's event will help with her medical bills. The fundraiser, which also features a raffle and silent auction, will be noon to midnight at Cruisers Bar, 87th and F Streets. Proceeds go to the Shelby Simpson Fund at Great Western Bank, including the $10 cover charge.
Be great, run 8: Registration is due Tuesday for a team relay race to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Council Bluffs. The walk-run event will be 8 a.m. Sept. 12. Members of four-person relay teams will walk or run a two-mile course to complete the eight-mile relay race, starting at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Council Bluffs, Charles E. Lakin human services campus, 815 N. 16th St. Registration is $80 per team or $25 per individual. Race forms are available at Boys and Girls Clubs and online at www.bgccb.org. Individuals who register before Tuesday will receive a race shirt. Registration on the day of the race will begin at 6:30 a.m.
Time to vote: Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer School in Humboldt, Neb., has been selected as one of 30 Spirit Awards finalists in Windstream's Classroom Connections program. The Spirit Award is a $5,000 donation to the school. An online vote, extended to Sept. 7, will determine the top 10 schools to receive the award. Sports theme: A pasta dinner and silent auction Friday will be a fundraiser in memory of Carter Aidan Mattsen, who died of neuroblastoma cancer a few days before his 4th birthday in June. The event will be held at El Museo Latino, 4701 S. 25th St., Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers will be among those signing autographs for $10 per item from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Pasta will be served from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for $10 per person. Donations also may be made directly to the Carter Mattsen Memorial Fund at Pinnacle Banks in the metro area.
Run, Walk and Roll: Reservations are due Friday for the fifth annual Run, Walk and Roll on Sept. 18. The event draws attention to the importance of exercise to overall health. It begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Alegent Health Immanuel Rehabilitation Center, 6901 N. 72nd St. Early entry fees are $20 for adults (13 and older), $10 for children ages 4 to 12, free for children under 4 and $15 for current or former Immanuel Rehab Center patients. Go Girl Run: Peak Performance, 519 N. 78th St., will host a five-kilometer and one-mile walk-run event for women and children at 8 a.m. on Labor Day, Sept. 6. The Pancake Man will provide breakfast, and participants will receive a flower as they cross the finish line. Registration is $21, and proceeds benefit Uta Halee Girls Village. Wildlife event: The Nebraska Alliance for Conservation and Environment Education will host Nebraska native and wildlife photographer Michael Forsberg at a Sept. 10 fundraiser. The evening also will include dinner and a live auction. The 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. event will be at Camp Carol Joy Holling Conference and Retreat Center in Ashland, Neb. Police vs. firefighters: Doors to the Omaha Guns & Hoses Boxing Challenge will open at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, with the first of 14 bouts between Omaha-area police officers and firefighters starting at 7:05 p.m. The boxing challenge will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Special Olympics and amateur youth boxing. VODEC walk: A fundraising walk along the Riverfront Trail in Council Bluffs to the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge on Sept. 11 will benefit metro-area programs of the Vocational Development Center. The center serves more than 500 adults with intellectual disabilities in the Omaha-Council Bluffs area. Tom Hanafan, mayor of Council Bluffs, will mark the 9 a.m. start of the walk. The Geezer Band will perform, Ameristar Casino will serve breakfast and lunch, and members of the University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team will assist. All-day heavy metal concert: Eighteen metal bands will perform at a benefit concert at the Sokol Underground on Sept. 11 from 1:30 p.m. to midnight. Every instrument brought to the show for donation is worth a $1 discount off admission.
