    'Special' use of Latravis

9:33 a.m.: Bo Pelini actually leaked some information on the Nebraska quarterbacks during his weekly coach's show that aired Sunday night.

Well, at least some info on one of them.

Pelini said NU plans to use backup Latravis Washington on some special teams, which Pelini also acknowledged is “fairly unusual” for a quarterback.

Washington, however, is a little different from the rest. Although he was a high school quarterback, he is 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds and played linebacker and special teams as both a freshman and sophomore at NU.

Some other items left in the notebook as the Huskers start “game week”:

    > NU assistant coach Ted Gilmore talked briefly last week about Tyler Evans, the freshman receiver from Waverly, Neb.: “I think when it's all said and done, this young man will be a Todd Peterson type of guy. He's going to work himself into a good player. His attention to detail is great. He's a smart young man.”

    > Found something in the Louisville Courier-Journal that told of Western Kentucky coach Willie Taggart once spending time as an intern with the Oakland Raiders, studying the West Coast offense and working some with the quarterbacks. The Raiders' head coach at the time? Bill Callahan.

    > Taggart on the Hilltoppers coming to Lincoln to match up with the Huskers: “Players get excited when you play a team like that. A lot of guys feel like they should be playing at that level, so it gives them a chance to show where they should be.”

    > Will Compton on the Huskers losing Sean Fisher at linebacker and the pressure for himself or others to step up: “A little bit, but I felt that way coming in. Fish would tell you the same thing if I got hurt. You've got to be ready no matter what.”
