1:35 p.m.: Postmortem from the Nebraska press conference on Tuesday: Coach Bo Pelini offered a bit of insight on the Huskers’ decision to wait on naming a starting quarterback, saying he didn’t “want it to become a circus.”
Pelini also offered praise for defensive tackle Jared Crick and linebacker Lavonte David, when asked about junior newcomer.
“I see a bright future for Lavonte,” Pelini said. “He’s come a long way in a short time. I think he’s only scratched the surface of where he can go.”
With all the talk about the quarterbacks and the defense of late, Pelini said, it would be wrong to overlook the NU running game – led by a trio of talented backs.
“The first thing that we want to be able to do is run the football,” the third-year coach said. “You have to do that to win championships, and I firmly believe that. If anybody’s overlooking the run game, I can promise you it’s not from the offices downstairs.”
Defensive coordinator Carl Pelini also addressed the media. He said, as usual, that he’s nervous for the start of the season.
“It wouldn’t matter if you brought all 11 guys back,” he said. “You’re untested.”
Time to settle the nerves arrives Saturday.
Look for a full plate of Husker coverage soon on the Big Red Page and on Husker Wednesday in The World-Herald, including more of Pelini’s method of handling the quarterbacks.
