3:49 p.m.: First observations from Big Ten alignment: According to ESPN’s Andy Katz, the divisions are:
> Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern
> Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Illinois, Indiana
The obvious news is Michigan and Ohio State splitting up. They’ll still play late in the season (how late we still don’t know), but could play again in the Big Ten championship game.
But what about Nebraska?
The Huskers will presumably face divisional foes and its crossover rival (Penn State) every year. The other five teams show up on Nebraska’s schedule twice every five years. That means NU won’t see Wisconsin and Ohio State very often, which is unfortunate.
However, Nebraska will have its hands full with Iowa, Michigan and Penn State every season.
As for Husker roadies, those trips to Northwestern in Chicago and Minnesota in the Twin Cities should be fun. (Beats going to Champaign, Ill., and Bloomington, Ind.) And seeing the Big House and Happy Valley, two of the largest stadiums in the land, will be a thrill, too.
Can’t wait to see the actual schedule in 2011. Rumor has it Nebraska might debut against an inter-divisional foe, Wisconsin.
