Job act helps West Corp. hire

It’s a hiring bonanza at West Corp.

Since May, the Omaha-based provider of communications and infrastructure management solutions has added about 1,000 call center jobs, some of which were temporary summer positions.

This week the company announced it plans to hire even more workers. This time they will be at-home agents who can set their own hours and work shifts, as short as one hour or as long as eight hours a day.

West, which has about 3,300 employees in Omaha, immediately will add 200 at-home workers. The company said it could hire a total of 1,000 over the next 12 months as a result of the Nebraska Teleworker Job Creation Act.

Signed into law April 7, the act gives Nebraska companies tax credits for creating teleworker jobs, also known as at-home agents.

The hiring push is a sign of strength for West, said David Pleiss, a company spokesman.

The first wave of hires mostly were production jobs for clients who “wanted to leverage (West’s) call centers,” Pleiss said.

The 1,000 positions will be divided among customer service, sales or technical support, depending on qualifications and previous experience, the company said in a statement.
