• The Nebraska State Fair is heading into its final weekend in Grand Island, Neb., and Friday is full of activities.
First, Friday is a day to celebrate Veterans. Admission is free for anone with Military ID.
The Veterans Day Celebration will be at 9 a.m. in the Hearland Events Center.
The midway hours are 1 p.m. to close. Boys Like Girls will have a free concert at 8 p.m. at the Heartland Events Center, a wristband is required.
Don't forget the Kidz Zone which is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. It offers something for everyone. Children of all ages and their families are invited to participate in numerous free family fun games, contests, and creative crafts every day of the Fair! Games can include: water balloon toss, relays, sponge run, eating contests and more!

• If you are in the mood to cheer on some local athletes, here are the top games of the night from the World-Heald sports department:
-- The Creighton women's soccer team hosts Iowa State at Morrison Stadium at 7 p.m.
-- The UNO volleyball team plays Northern State University at 7 p.m.
-- Millard West takes on Millard South at Buell Stadium, 149th and Q Streets at 7 p.m.
-- Omaha North plays at Omaha Central at 124 N. 20th. at 5 p.m.
• Septemberfest will provide a full weekend of activities at Qwest Center Omaha. On Friday, midway hours are 5 p.m. to midnight; Admission $3, children under 5 admitted free.
From 5 p.m to 7 p.m. the Amazing Arthur will entertain the crowds with magic, juggling, YoYo's, and hypnosis. He even knows how to make balloon animals.
There will be live entertainment beginning at 6:30 p.m.: Jimmy Weber Band, SwitchBak and Jason Michael Carroll will perform.
Carnival ride lovers who attend Septemberfest can get a Megaride Pass for the Midway that will allow them to ride every ride as many times as they like all five days of the festival. The tickets are available at Hy-Vee stores for $26.50; at the gate they will cost $31.
• If you love all things Italian, head on over to Omaha's La Festa Italiana starting Friday.
This year, the American Italian Heritage Society's annual event is being held in a new location, the National Guard Readiness Center at 116th Street and Rainwood Road.
The festival will offer authentic Italian food, a variety of entertainment and lots of fun from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday. Live entertainment Friday nigth includes John Ciotta at 7 p.m. and ShurThing at 8:30 p.m.
Admission will be $6.50 at the door, but it's free for children younger than 12.
• A silent auction and pasta feed will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in memory of Carter Aidan Mattsen. He died June 7, four days before his fourth birthday, from neuroblastoma.
Pasta, $10 a person, will be served from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at El Museo Latino, 4701 S. 25th St.
Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers and Terry Rodgers will sign autographs from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for $10 per item.
All proceeds will go to the Carter Mattsen Memorial Fund. Donations to the fund may also be made at any Pinnacle Bank location in the Omaha area.
• Omaha Westside will have a Kickoff Carnival in the front walkway at 5 p.m. Friday. At the same time, the Varsity Dance Dinner will begin in the Warrior Room.
• The 19th annual Oregon Trail Rodeo will stampede into Hastings, Neb., Friday.
More than $40,000 will be up for grabs for each of the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association and Women's Pro Rodeo Association competitors. The rodeo will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Adams County Fairgrounds.

• Amateur astronomers will gather at Whiterock Conservancy, southeast of Coon Rapids, Iowa, for the eighth annual Iowa Star Party.
They have planned a free public viewing beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The public event will open with a short “Astronomy 101” class from local and regional astronomers. The rest of the evening, everyone is invited to walk around what is possibly the darkest pasture in the state, to visit each telescope and use it with the assistance of its astronomy-enthusiast owner.

• Hillsborough Homeowners Association Movies in Park - The association will provide family-friendly flicks and popcorn. Bring lawn chairs or blankets and get comfortable with the neighbors, weather permitting.
