The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports that major industrial greenhouse gas emissions declined about 8 percent from 2008 to 2009.
The drop most likely is due to the recession and reduced industrial, according to a report provided to the Iowa governor and General Assembly. Reported emissions in 2009 were 56.69 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, or the equivalent of the exhaust from 10.8 million passenger vehicles a year.
The report covers greenhouse gas emissions primarily from the ethanol, electric power, cement, iron and steel and fertilizer industries. Gases included in the report include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride.
