Royals still have shot at playoffs

By Rob White

The Omaha Royals still have a slight chance of reaching the Pacific Coast League playoffs, the league office announced Friday.

Should the Royals win their four remaining games in Oklahoma City while Iowa and Memphis split their four-game series in Des Moines, there would be a three-way tie for first place in the American Conference North Division and Omaha would win the tiebreaker and advance to the playoffs on the basis of its record against other divisional teams.

Should the Royals reach the playoffs, they would host the first two games of a playoff series Wednesday and Thursday at Rosenblatt Stadium, the park to which the Royals just gave a farewell tribute. The PCL championship series, if the Royals reach it, would see one game at Rosenblatt on Sept. 17, as well as potential games on Sept. 18 and 19, if necessary.

The first tiebreaker in a three-way tie is record among tied teams: Omaha and Memphis would both be 17-15 in that scenario and Iowa would be 14-18, which would eliminate Iowa. The next tiebreaker is intradivision record and Memphis' 24-24 record would be one game behind Omaha's 25-23 mark. Omaha would be awarded the playoff spot even though Memphis won the regular-season series 9-7, the PCL said.

If the Royals keep winning, the earliest they could possibly be eliminated is Sunday. The regular season ends Monday.

If Omaha loses one game, or if Iowa or Memphis win three times, then Omaha would be eliminated.

Memphis and Iowa are currently tied for first, and Omaha is two games behind.
