Huskers move past Cal Poly, Idaho State

PROVO, Utah — It was one of the quickest turnarounds the Nebraska volleyball team has had to make in years. The Huskers rose to the challenge and made quick work of Cal Poly and Idaho State.

Completing two matches in a span of less than six hours, the No. 7 Huskers wrapped up a 3-0 showing at the BYU Invitational on Saturday by sweeping the Mustangs and the Bengals.

Nebraska beat Cal Poly 25-15, 25-18, 25-17, and then coach John Cook’s team topped Idaho State 25-16, 25-17, 25-12.

The Huskers dropped an error-filled first set against Brigham Young on Friday night. But Cook said he was pleased with the way Nebraska regrouped to win nine straight sets and a tournament title in Provo.

“Against these teams, when we’re playing well, we should be able to dominate,” Cook said after Nebraska beat Idaho State and improved to 5-1. “We still have a long ways to go before we’re playing great volleyball and are a great team. But I like what we did this weekend.”

During Nebraska’s first match Saturday against Cal Poly, Hannah Werth put away 12 kills on .333 hitting. Right-side hitters Lindsey Licht and Morgan Broekhuis combined for 15 kills, and both hit better than .330. Brooke Delano had seven kills and five blocks against the Mustangs, while setters Sydney Anderson and Lauren Cook helped NU swing at a season-best .348 clip.

That mark didn’t last long as Nebraska hit .368 against Idaho State, with the two setters each recording 19 assists.

During the final match Saturday, outside hitter Gina Mancuso and middle blocker Jordan Wilberger started in NU’s 6-2 attack. Mancuso tied her career high with 10 kills on .368 hitting, while Wilberger added a career-best 11 kills and one error on 16 swings.

Delano enjoyed a monster of a match against Idaho State, finishing with eight blocks, three aces and nine kills on .533 attacking. Werth added two aces as NU notched seven ace serves against three serving errors. Libero Kayla Banwarth also had a big hand in NU’s weekend success with 48 total digs in the three wins.

The Huskers will play their first true home matches of 2010 next weekend when they host a strong field at the Ameritas Players Challenge. Nebraska takes on 20th-ranked Dayton on Thursday, Western Michigan on Friday and No. 5 Illinois on Saturday.

“It’s going to be a very tough tournament,” said Cook, whose team will play Illinois at the Devaney Center. “Dayton’s off to a great start, Western Michigan is very good and we know that Illinois just beat Texas 3-0 (in Austin). So the fans need to fire up.”
