3:05 p.m.: Walking into the Cornhusker Marriott today after parking in the adjoining garage, I figured I'd see a few of the Western Kentucky players heading down the escalator for their final meetings before loading the buses to head to Memorial Stadium for tonight's season opening game against Nebraska.
For several years, we've killed time before the games hanging out in the lobby and even that lower level to do some reading or just listen to music. Two years ago, the Kansas players took seats around us, looking at us like we were the outsiders, wondering what the heck we were doing down here. I still regret not having my son Alex take a picture with Mark Mangino, with whom we exchanged pleasantries before heading upstairs. Would have made a great Christmas card.
Anyway, a couple of minutes after 2 p.m. a handful of Nebraska players were headed down that escalator, followed by coach Bo Pelini. Guess we won't be reading downstairs anymore. A couple of hotel employees were guarding the escalators, and a sign was posted restricting access only to players and coaches.
The lobby isn't as crowded today; everybody is out in front of the hotel waiting to watch the Huskers get on the buses for their escort to North Stadium.
I guess Mack Brown, Gary Pinkel, Turner Gill and whoever is coaching Colorado Nov. 26 will have to find another place to stay later in the season -- the Cornhusker once again is home of the Huskers.
