Pass the syrup: Union (Neb.) Volunteer Fire and Rescue will have a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at the firehouse. The cost will be $6 for adults, $4 for children.
For MDA: Bag N' Save, 90th and Maple Streets, will sponsor its sixth Muscular Dystrophy Association Fishbowl on Monday for the MDA Jerry Lewis Telethon. The public can stop by to make donations during the airing of the telethon. The Fishbowl events will include games, a bounce house, prizes, entertainment and food. All proceeds will go to MDA.
Helping students: Bailey's Breakfast & Lunch and Shucks Fish House & Oyster Bar (both locations) will have a fundraiser Tuesday for the Omaha Hearing School. Ten percent of all food and beverage sales that day will go the school. Bailey's is at 1259 S. 120th St.; Shucks is at 1218 S. 119th Street (inside Absolutely Fresh Seafood) and at 16901 Wright Plaza.
Add cheese, please: Smashburger, which will open Wednesday at Twin Creek and Summit Plaza Drives in Bellevue, will partner with the American Red Cross Heartland Chapter to provide services to military families. For every All American Smashburger sold during September at the Bellevue location, 50 cents will be donated to the Red Cross' Armed Forces program.
Saying thanks: The fifth annual Bellevue/Offutt Community Freedom Walk will begin at 4:30 p.m. Thursday the Bellevue Public Schools Lied Activity Center, Nebraska Highway 370 and Fort Crook Road. The event, which is free to the public, is an opportunity to say thank you to military families. Towns throughout the United States will sponsor similar walks. The one-mile walk in Bellevue will be around the campus of the Bellevue Public Schools/Offutt Air Force Base Lifelong Learning Center. Bands will play patriotic music, and everyone will be invited to sign Nebraska flags that will be sent overseas to thank the troops.
For children: “Be Inspired” is a fundraising reception presented by the Nebraska Council for Exceptional Children. The evening will include hors d'oeuvres, beverages, entertainment, raffles and silent and oral auctions. Proceeds will support inclusive activities for students with disabilities, family training and advocacy, professional development opportunities and scholarships for special educators. The event is will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Georgetown Club, 2440 S. 141st Circle. Tickets, $20 for one or $30 for a pair, are available at http://nebraskacec.homestead.com.
Tee time: Registrations are due Friday for Echoes Explosion Softball benefit golf tournament. It will begin at 9 a.m. Sept. 18 at Eagle Hills Golf Course in Papillion. To register, $65 per person or $260 per team, contact Kris Howery at 657-2839 or Howery4@cox.net.
Helping the troops: Sam and Louie's locations in Nebraska and Iowa will have a fundraiser for Nebraska Troop Support, which donates time, items and money to send care packages to military members. From Friday through Sept. 12, 15 percent of sales at participating Sam and Louie's locations will be donated for care packages to be sent overseas. These Sam and Louie's locations also will have collection boxes available for those wishing to donate items for the care packages: 120th and Blondo Streets, 180th and Q Streets, 2949 N. 204th St. and 3608 Twin Creek Drive in Bellevue.
Benefit barbecue: Phi Kappa Fry, a benefit for Boys and Girls Club of Omaha, will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at Creighton University's Morrison Stadium, 2500 California Plaza. Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity at CU is putting on the barbecue.
Charity softball game: Saturday's “Guns and Hoses” charity softball game will benefit Children's Hospital & Medical Center. The friendly competition in Crescent, Iowa, will pit local firefighters and police officers at Crescent's new youth baseball and softball field. Activities will begin at 3:30 p.m. with a home run derby. The softball game will follow with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. Admission will be $5 at the gate.
Blanketing the Midlands: Omaha Project Linus will celebrate its seventh birthday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Tangier Shrine Center (lower level), south of 84th Street and West Center Road. Everyone is welcome to attend and help make blankets and afghans for seriously ill or traumatized children. Bring new, handmade, washable blankets and afghans or your knitting or crocheting or your sewing machine or just yourself.
