NORTH PLATTE, Neb. -- The Lincoln County Fairgrounds Ag building was packed Monday, as hundreds of union workers and their families attended a Labor Day picnic.

The annual picnic is sponsored by the Midwest Nebraska Central Labor Council and the law offices of Hunegs, LeNeave and Kvas.

"It's a way to give back to the laborers and is something we've done since 1990," said MNCLC president Kevin Sheffield. "We expect about 650 people each year. "

Sen. Tom Hansen and 3rd District Democratic candidate for Congress Rebekah Davis campaigned at the event.

"It's a big deal," Hansen said of the picnic. "It takes a lot of work to run a railroad, in fact, there are 2,600 railroaders in my district. If it weren't for the railroad, there wouldn't be a ranching industry in this part of the state. It would still be a desert."

The MNCLC began as the Central Labor Council of North Platte in 1973. It encompasses 27 counties from South Dakota to Kansas.
