FREMONT, Neb. (AP) — The city of Fremont's ban on renting to and hiring illegal immigrants has raised concerns among members of a Nebraska committee that reports to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
Jose Soto, a member of the Nebraska Advisory Committee, says the voter-approved ordinance has the potential to infringe on people's civil rights.
He says that, combined with the potential for other immigration-related legislation at local and state levels, prompted the committee to allow testimony on the Fremont ordinance at its Wednesday meeting in Lincoln.
Soto says that of particular concern is the potential for state legislation similar to Arizona's divisive immigration law.
