The Treynor senior is fresh off a first-place finish at Tuesday’s Treynor cross country invitational and recently cracked the Iowa Association of Track Coaches’ Class 1-A rankings at No. 15. Sain is a returning state qualifier.
Q: Did you expect to dictate the tempo as much as you did at the Treynor Invite?
A: I actually expected to dictate it a little more. There’s a runner from Riverside (John Gunderson) that was in front of me for a good mile. Right out of the bat, he came out and was flying. I was expecting to lead the race from the start, but he really surprised me. He’s gotten much stronger, and I’ll have to watch out for him.
Q: What did it mean to you to win your home race in Treynor?
A: It’s nice. In the past I did well, but this year I decided to take things real serious. Over the summer, I tried very hard with my conditioning, and it’s just nice to see all that pay off by coming in here and winning.
Q: You’re now ranked 15th in Class 1-A. Do you put much stock into that ranking?
A: Well, I’m hoping to run in college, depending on where I go, so rankings are always good in that respect. It definitely means quite a bit. I’m getting a little payoff for my hard work and it feels good. Hopefully all that will carry over into the future.
Q: Do you have your eye on any particular schools?
A: I’m so undecided, mostly on just what I want to do in the future. It’s hard to pick a school at this point. I’ve received a few letters in the mail from colleges that seem interested. That’s nice to see, but we’ll just see what happens.
Q: You’re off to a tremendous start this year. What personal goals have you set for yourself?
A: I’m really gunning for the top 10 at state. If I get that, I’ll be real satisfied with the season. It’s going to be difficult. I realize top 10 at state is really big, but I’m just going to go for it and see what happens.
