New direction for Harvest Days traffic

The Nebraska State Patrol hopes to alleviate delays around Grand Island by changing the traffic flow near the site of this year’s Husker Harvest Days.

During the event — Sept. 14 through Sept. 16 — Husker Highway will at times be one-way between Alda Road and the event site, which is six miles west of Grand Island on Husker Highway. Traffic will be westbound each morning from 8 to noon, transition to two-way from noon to 3 p.m. and then to one-way eastbound after 3 p.m.

County roads west of Alda Road that intersect Husker Highway will be closed to avoid confusion.

State troopers will direct traffic where Husker Highway meets Alda Road, and cones and extra signs will alert drivers to the changes.

The State Patrol decided to make the temporary changes because last year traffic was so heavy that it backed up several miles, said State Patrol Lt. Bill Keeling.

This year, vehicles should be able to move about twice as fast, he said. “We want to be more efficient, but we’re concerned primarily that people get in there safely and get out safely.”
