Omaha police took two teenage boys into custody Thursday after a foot pursuit near 41st Street and Ames Avenue, where one of the teens allegedly pointed a gun at an officer, authorities said.

Police received a call about 10:30 a.m. that two men were breaking into cars in an alley near the intersection of 40th Street and Ames Avenue.

Police said officers saw the two teens running from one of the vehicles they had broken into. One of the boys, a 17-year-old, allegedly pointed a gun at one of the officers as he fled.

Officers lost sight of the teens on 41st Street, just north of Ames Avenue. Heavily-armed officers and police dogs set up a perimeter on Ames Avenue from about 39th to 42nd Streets.

Witnesses saw the 17-year-old enter a garage in the area. Police deployed mace inside to force him out. Police yanked the second boy, a 16-year-old, from the bed of a nearby pickup truck.

No gun was found, said Officer Jacob Bettin.

The teens were arrested and booked into the Douglas County Youth Center on suspicion of minor in possession of a firearm, felony destruction of property to a motor vehicle, theft from a motor vehicle, obstructing a peace officer and gioing false information.

Bettin commended neighbors for reporting the initial activity. He said that kind of neighborhood involvement is key to officers doing their jobs.
